If You Are Willing...

A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said. Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed.
-Mark 1:40-42

Jesus may not physically be in front of me...and I may not have 'leprosy', per say, but...I've still got dirt. I still have frequent moments where I need to fall on my face and ask Jesus to make me clean. There is nothing I can do to fix my 'human condition'...nothing. There is only one way. One truth. One life. And that one touch is enough. His grace IS enough.

So, here I go. Kneeling in front of my savior. Begging to be healed. Lord, if you are willing...make me clean. Because you're the only one who can.

In Need Of Your Support...

Dear Family and Friends,

I am writing to sincerely thank you for all the support, thoughts, and prayers you’ve provided in my life this far. I’m also writing to invite you to be a part of the next steps in my journey with the Lord. I have received a wonderful opportunity to come onboard as a full-time staff member with an incredible organization called Tear Down The Walls Ministries. TDWM’s mission is to share the love and truth of Jesus Christ with Indianapolis’ homeless population and at-risk urban youth. My main responsibilities include: mentoring TDWM’s high school interns, organizing and facilitating weekly youth group meetings, homeless case management and street outreach, as well as managing phone, e-mail, and social media communication. I am very excited to see how God is working right here in Indianapolis, and how He is allowing me to be a part of it.

These past several months have been exciting and difficult ones to go through. The Lord has been challenging me to follow after Him in every aspect of my life. He has been asking me to chase after Him without worrying; reminding me to simply walk in His footsteps knowing that He has a plan and will continue to guide my path. I feel that this opportunity with TDWM is a vital piece in my walk with the Lord. I have spent a great deal of time volunteering with TDWM and have come face to face with so many people who are frequently thought of as the lowest and most hopeless in our society; but a lack of possessions, less-than-ideal living situation, or past and present struggles do not make anyone less deserving of God’s amazing love. I’m learning to look at the world through the eyes of Christ and reach out with love in all circumstances. I am so excited for this chance to be the hands and feet that help bring the powerful love of Jesus to people who have felt or been told for so long that they are beyond hope or that they are not good enough to be loved. I am so thankful that God has given me a heart able to reject this world’s view of inner-city troubles and those who are hurting or struggling. I am confident that God is going to continue to break my heart for serving those who are constantly shoved aside and continuously overlooked.

As a staff member I am responsible for raising my entire salary. So, needless to say, I am taking a giant leap of faith, but I am completely confident that God has called me to this position and I trust that in following His plan all my needs will be provided.

I am asking you to, first, please partner with me in praying for TDWM and all those who are served through the many programs and services provided. I’d also like to ask you to pray for my effectiveness as part of this organization as well as my personal and spiritual growth.

Second, please consider supporting me financially in this ministry opportunity through start-up or monthly contributions. No gift is too small, nor will any amount of support go unappreciated. Anything you can commit to will bring me closer to my goal and continue to make this opportunity possible.

Finally, think about offering your time, energy, or resources to stand alongside TDWM and myself. There are an infinite number ways that you can make a positive difference in this city, in someone’s life, or even in yourself by being willing to take a step outside your comfort zone.

If you are willing to partner with me and/or TDWM on any level to help extend genuine love and quality time to both the homeless population and at-risk youth in Indianapolis, I have enclosed a Partnership Commitment Card for your response. There are a number of ways you can be a part of this with me, so please do no hesitate to reply with whatever decision or commitment God has laid on your heart.

I have been so blessed by the situations in which God has planted me and the people He has placed around me. It’s almost impossible to explain how much work God has done in my life and in my heart to mold and shape me and bring me to where I am today. I know the thoughts and prayers of great friends and dearly-loved family members had more than a lot to do with that. So, as much as I need your financial support, and I really do, I also really need your prayers.

I want to thank you again for being a part of my life. I’m excited to continue to share with you where the Lord is leading me and what He is teaching me through all this. Please don’t hesitate to keep in touch with me as I continue to journey this path along which God is guiding me.

Because He First Loved Us,

Jena Osbon

New Partnerships & Next Steps...

Some really exciting news came late last week about a new partnership between Tear Down The Walls Ministries and Watkins Family Center! Here is the e-mail from the director of TDWM explaining what is going to be happening:

"TDWM signed a partnership with Watkins Family Center and Indy Parks and Recreation yesterday. We plan to start these programs next week. Our part of the partnership is to provide staff and youth programming as follows.
TDWM and our volunteers plan to provide two hours of mentoring and tutoring for area youth two days a week on Tuesday and Thursday 6pm-8pm at the Watkins Family Center and Watkins Park and 3-4 hours youth service programs two additional days a week on Wednesday and Saturday 6:30pm-9:30pm at Watkins park and family center and at other areas in the community. At the Watkins Park and Family Center we plan to provide nutrition, lessons and activities. We would include lessons and activities on leadership, community development, core values, service projects, anger management, anti-violence, anti-drug, interdependence, empowerment, accountability, faith, hope and love. Our volunteer/mentor group is made of diverse selection of men and women young and old of a variety ethnic and religious backgrounds. Though we are a Christ centered, faith based organization we always include our services in a kind and caring manner to anyone and everyone regardless of their ethnic and/or religious backgrounds and beliefs.
We plan to bring two part time staff on to develop, implement, and supervise these programs Jena Osbon and Kyle Schlenz. Both are young Christians who have experience with mentoring youth and have been worked as volunteers with TDWM. Their job description includes working with our high school and college interns and our student advisory board to develop, implement, raise funds and write grants for these programs.
Gearing up for this new programming we plan to send a few of our staff and student leaders to leadership training next month in Cincinnati at the Christian Community Development Conference.
We need to obtain funding for these programs to pay for the staff, food, training, materials, and transportation (obtain a bus and/or 15 passenger van)
Thank you and may God bless you.”

So, if you caught that up there – I am going to be coming onboard with TDWM as a part-time staff member! We are shooting for this to be full-time in the near future! I feel so blessed that God is using me and allowing me to be part of what TDWM is doing here in the city! Please be praying for TDWM’s new partnership, as well as my next steps as the Lord leads into this new position in ministry!

Rude Awakening...

Over the last few months I’ve become involved with a great organization here in Indianapolis called Tear Down the Walls Ministries. TDWM helps a number of homeless men and women as well as inner-city youth; so far the street outreach to the homeless is what I have been most involved with.

Coming from such a small community I had never had the chance to encounter someone begging for money, let alone someone who actually LIVED on the streets. My only insight came from my family and friends, and maybe the media. A lot of the time I heard things like “There are so many jobs in that big city, they are just lazy…” or “It’s their fault they ended up where they are…they must have done something wrong…”. So naturally, when I passed by a person who was panhandling, my first instinct was to NOT make eye contact and maybe even walk a little faster.

After being in the city for about a year I was lucky to have some friends who were not so frightened by these situations. We went out one night and just talked to and spent time with some of the people shaking cups and sleeping in doorways. That helped open my eyes to the fact that they were people, no different than me and my friends. After that I went out every once in a while to talk to the homeless folks around town, we even made sack lunches a couple times to take and hand out.

Over the next year God just really began to tug at my heart and I knew that I had to do something. I started doing small things on my own and I was really glad that God was able to use me, even if it was something as little as handing a note or a couple snacks to the few people who would stand at the end of the off ramp I drove down nearly every day.

So, that is kind of how I got to where I am now. I got involved with TDWM after looking for an opportunity to serve with my small group. After the first night of street outreach I was hooked.

When I showed up at the DAT House that first night, we were told that we could walk around downtown to pass out food and visit with the homeless people or we could drive to the camps and do the same. I was curious about this whole “camp” business. Since I had walked around downtown plenty of times doing similar things, I wanted to check this out. That night we visited Davidson Street Bridge (also known as Dodge City), Pine Street Bridge, some people living on the porch of an abandoned house, a guy living in a random bus stop shelter, another guy living in his car, and about three camps along the banks of the White River. Wow, did I feel ignorant…well, actually, I felt A LOT of things after experiencing each of these place and all of the people. I had seen things like that on the news and in movies, but that didn’t happen in Indiana, did it? I mean, I can see Chicago, New York, and LA…but, Indiana? Driving home that night I could not say a word, I couldn’t even open my mouth to sing along to the radio. I lied awake in bed trying to take in everything that I had just seen. Honestly, I was silent the next morning as well. It was such an eye-opener; something I certainly needed to see.

After a couple weeks I feel like things started to fall right into place and I began developing relationships with the people we were serving each week. It is unreal how positive and how much faith some of these people have. I’m so lucky to have met so many great people with fascinating stories and lessons to share. I just pray that people will see that not every person they pass on the street is a “lazy, drug-addicted, alcoholic”. They are real, living, breathing people with hearts and feelings just like you and me.

I would love to tell you all the stories about all the awesome people I’ve met and some of our crazy adventures, but this might get really long – so I’ll save those for another time. However, I would like to tell you about Spanky. He promised that was his real name, so as far as I know, Spanky really is Spanky. We bumped into him tonight on Meridian Street. He told us he dances in front of the bars and sometimes that is how he earns money; he was actually dancing when we approached him tonight. He definitely got a smile out of all of us. What really bothers me though, is what happened to him and his friends last night. Spanky and his friends sleep in a parking garage downtown and he woke up last night to someone kicking him in the side, once he realized he wasn’t dreaming and that someone had really just KICKED him WHILE HE WAS SLEEPING, they did it again. He told us he asked them why they were kicking him, but that is about as far as he took it since he is a pretty small guy and he didn’t want to get into a fight. Then he told us he was really scared about things going on in town this weekend. He mentioned that in the past years, during this same weekend of festivities, he has had other homeless friends both SHOT and STABBED, for no other reason than hatred. I’m really uneasy about all of that. I’m not sure how someone can have the nerve to kick a sleeping man, let alone stab someone just because their lifestyle seems strange or bizarre. And this sure isn’t the only story I’ve heard about violent acts being carried out against the homeless people of this city, but this is just fresh in my heart and in my mind.

So, if you would, please just pray for the safety of our friends that have ended up in situations that are less than ideal and in sleeping arrangements that aren’t extremely safe.

Here I Go...

Well, I’m going to guess that most of you reading this already know me and bits and pieces of my life and my story…but, just in case you don’t, or you are interested in knowing a little more…

I’m Jena! The first and probably most important thing I’d like to share with you is how my life has been dramatically changed over the last few years…

In the past, I defined my life and even my worth by things like friends, clubs/organizations, parties, sports, boys, grades, looks, or any other thing that I thought would somehow gratify me. My mind was wrapped around questions and a constant search for fulfillment. Near the end of my senior year of high school I was at an FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) meeting and a friend asked to play a song before everyone left. The song was “Awakening” by Seven Places – which was more of someone speaking than someone singing, but nonetheless, it spoke right to my heart. I quickly dismissed a lot of the things I mulled over after that by assuring myself that I was okay…I mean, I grew up going to church and Sunday school, I knew some Bible verses, I prayed every once in a while, and it’s not like I ever really did anything THAT bad.

It took some time for me to finally come to grips with the fact that being “good” wasn’t the point, and I actually wasn’t as “good” as I had imagined anyway. A few months into my first year of college a couple girls knocked on my door and asked me if I would be interested in checking out a discussion group. I still didn’t know too many people, so I figured at the least I could meet a few new girls that lived in the dorm. I honestly couldn’t tell you anything we talked about; the only things I remember from that night are hearing the story of how God had changed one girl’s life, seeing something called the bridge diagram, and A LOT of tears! The funny thing is I had seen that illustration and heard similar messages a million times before, but this time, it all “clicked”. (If you’ve never seen or heard of the bridge diagram, it pretty much shows the distance between man and God because of our disobedience, but explains that Jesus died on the cross to “bridge” that gap). God quickly opened my eyes to show me how far away from Him I had strayed and how all my seemly good actions had missed the mark, and my life would continue in the same direction without Him.

That night I heard something that was an entirely new concept to me…a “relationship” with Jesus Christ. God had always just been this big, distant, mysterious…thing…not really available for any sort of relationship?
Over Christmas break I was invited to attend a retreat in Nashville, TN. The week was full of new friends, sightseeing, very little sleep, and some very encouraging stories about college, about God, and about life in general. After everything I had heard, seen, and especially felt over the last few months, I finally knew what I needed; and the last night of the retreat (which happened to be New Years Eve), I decided to surrender my life to Jesus Christ. I don’t remember what I said, but I’m sure it wasn’t an elaborate prayer, and it didn’t need to be – God already knew everything I wanted and needed to say.

My heart and desires were radically changed, almost instantly. I could see how my attitude and behaviors were mean and hurtful, the pleasure I used to get from walking all over other people to build myself up was gone and I was heartbroken and ashamed of what had become second nature to me. But thankfully I didn’t have to worry about the past anymore, everything was gone…my slate was wiped completely clean.

Now, every day I do my best to live my life for the One who gave His life for me. It’s been about three and a half years since my Savior so graciously rescued me and I’m know I’m not the first to admit it’s not always easy, and I’m not even close to being perfect, so of course there are struggles. But, every time I’ve fallen down or wandered away, God has been right there, reaching out to pick me up and put me right back where I belong – beside Him.

So there's an introduction or maybe update for some of you :)…Oh, and the entries prior to this one are all old randoms from MySpace, just FYI...

A Two & A Five...

Just for fun...oh, and for those of you who aren't part of the wonderful world of Facebook...I'll post it here as well...;)

1. I grew up in a TINY farm town – I miss all the “neighborly things” like the way everyone waves when you pass them on a back road and the old men drinking coffee at the gas station in the morning. I kind of miss all those hard-working country boys too – I’m just not impressed with the prissy city boys.
2. I’m positive I could not go a day without music – I think it has honestly saved my life on many occasions.
3. I was in cheerleading, gymnastics, and/or dance since I was 3 – I miss cheerleading, A LOT!
4. I love football and can actually follow a game and know what’s going on, unlike some girls, ugh – the Chicago Bears are my favorite.
5. I own too much of a lot of things, including: lotion, diet pills, hooded sweatshirts, and Hot Box Pizza cups.
6. There are very few people who I will willing talk to over the phone – I’m a huge fan of texts and e-mails, if you are one of the few who I call or answer when you call...feel special :).
8. My mommy is one of my best friends – I can tell her anything, and I think that is awesome.
9. It’s safe to say I love my pets as much as most people love their children – right now I have two cats and a bunny.
10. 10 is one of my favorite numbers, I also like 11 and 5.
11. I think my one “talent” is supporting my talented friends – I have so many that I admire/am proud of :).
12. I get cold after I eat, almost instantly.
13. I’ve been out of the country twice – once to Japan for an Indy Car race and once to Canada to see Niagara Falls.
14. I wish I had a normal relationship with my “Dad” – Most days I’m convinced it’s too late.
15. GIVING gifts is one of my favorite things EVER.
16. I believe, with every bit of my being, that everything happens for a reason, period.
17. I miss my old friends so much, but I am so grateful for my new ones – it’s funny how life turns out.
18. I have four tattoos – but there will be plenty more to come. Oh, and I find them extremely attractive on guys ;).
19. When I like someone or something I completely obsess.
20. I love Jesus with all my heart, even when I don’t act like it :(.
21. I’ve had the same car since I was in high school – “we’ve” been though a lot.
22. I yawn when I am nervous.
23. I have an addiction to shoes and extreme loyalty to my “guy” at Journey’s.
24. I’ve been in love twice.
25. I’m graduating from college this summer and all I know is that my best friend and I are moving away from here – I have no idea what I want to do with my life and that scares the crap out of me.
